Insolvency: Where to Find Help and Advice
If you have a question about bankruptcy, company insolvency, redundancy or money difficulties, it is important to contact the right organisation. The information below covers the main UK services and explains where to find current, official guidance.
Contact the Insolvency Service
The Insolvency Service provides information about bankruptcy, debt relief orders, company liquidation and related procedures. For general enquiries, telephone 0300 678 0015, Monday to Thursday, 9am to 5pm, or Friday, 9am to 3pm. You can also email insolvency.enquiryline@insolvency.gov.uk.
For up-to-date guidance, contact forms and details of the services available, visit the Insolvency Service on GOV.UK.
Important: The Insolvency Service can explain procedures, but it cannot provide personal legal or financial advice, or discuss individual cases through its general enquiries line.
Bankruptcy and Official Receivers
An Official Receiver deals with the administration and investigation of bankruptcy cases and companies subject to compulsory liquidation. If you are already involved in a case, use the government’s official contact directory to find the appropriate team rather than relying on old office addresses or telephone numbers.
If you are considering bankruptcy, first review your options and seek independent advice. GOV.UK explains how to get help with insolvency, including debt relief and bankruptcy procedures.
Redundancy Payments When an Employer Is Insolvent
Employees whose employer has become insolvent may be eligible to claim certain statutory payments, including redundancy pay, unpaid wages, holiday pay or statutory notice pay, depending on their circumstances.
For claims and guidance, visit the government claims service. The Redundancy Payments helpline is 0330 331 0020, open Monday to Thursday, 9am to 5pm, and Friday, 9am to 3pm.
Dealing With Debt
If you are having trouble paying bills or meeting your mortgage commitments, speak to a free, independent debt adviser before making major financial decisions. Citizens Advice offers guidance on debt, benefits and housing problems. You can also find confidential support from National Debtline and StepChange.
Property Repossession and Mortgage Arrears
If you have fallen behind with your mortgage, contact your lender promptly and get impartial advice. Repossession is not always immediate, and you may be able to negotiate payments or challenge a possession claim. GOV.UK outlines what happens in repossession proceedings, while Citizens Advice explains how to deal with mortgage arrears.
For survey and property-related questions, Westville Associates provides surveying information. Surveyors and property managers do not replace regulated debt or legal advisers.
